2021 Hopwood 100

This coming weekend of the 10th/11th of April will see one of motor racing’s most favourite categories with the classic HQ Holden’s, congregating at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway to compete for one of the categories most historically predtigious trophies.

For over two decades, the HQ Racing category has recognised a NSW based driver for his success and role in establishing the category into mainstream racing events and eventually became the benchmark driver in the category. With this in mind, Wakefield Park Raceway with the past track manager and renowned racer himself Gary Wilmington established an event in recognition of Peter Hopwood to commemorate his synonymous history in the HQ Holden category with a unique 1hr race. Hopwood was a multiple Bathurst and National HQ Racing Champions, along with consistent wins across the country, plus F1 support races at Adelaide. Hopwood was also a multiple NSW HQ Holden State Champion in 1991/92.

With sporadic running of the Hopwood 100 event, along with it missing from the calendar for too long, April 2021 will see the long awaited return of the “Equity Views Construction” sponsored Hopwood  event and includes almost 30 of NSW’s best drivers from now and yesteryear. Multiple National Champion Brett Osborn, former NSW State Champions Chris Buckley and John Baxter along with present front runners and race winners including Chris Molle, Jason Molle, Luke Harrison and current NSW State Champion Glenn Deering will all be competing for the race win.

Competitors have elected to include a co driver, or complete the 1hr race as a solo entrant. Drivers will compete over the weekend in a combination of shorter sprint races on Saturday, before completing the trophy race on Sunday. At this stage, former race winners Brett Osborn and co driver John Baxter are favourites, along with NSW #1 Glenn Deering with returning HQ racer Jeff Mulligan. Luke and Jack Harrison are also tipped to be in contention along with current NSW race winner Chris Molle racing solo against his brother Jason Molle teaming up with newcomer Luc Button. Underdogs including the HQ Xtra pairing of Chris Buckley and Wayne Healey will battle all the way with the loveable odd couple of Perdo Marusic and Adam Leach and the rest of the hungry HQ Racing fraternity for an upset result. Leach himself actually owns a Hopwood Team HQ Race car that was originally owned and log booked by Peter Hopwood before being sold on to Steve Butchart and currently being rebuilt presently for a race return hopefully later this year.

With lots to be gained and an unpredictable weekend ahead, head down to Goulburn to watch the “Equity Views Construction” Peter Hopwood Cup event in person along with the Super Trucks and the other support categories.
